Gigi Hadid‘s comments about Palestine got the model in quite some backlash. After showing her support to Palestinians, a follower called Gigi “anti-Semitic.”
To be honest, it’s a slipper slope for celebrities to get involved in day to day issues. I mean, I condone this, they have a huge platform, and they can address to the masses. But more often than not, people don’t see celebrities as… well… People.
Whenever something bad happens, or political, at least, celebrities always receive a percentage of backlash. Since you can’t please everyone, there’s always going to be bad comments.
The situation between Israel and Palestine is concerning for everyone. Especially for celebrities who have families and friends there. But Gigi Hadid’s comments about Palestine received quite some backlash.
Gigi and her sister, Bella Hadid, have roots in Palestine, and both of them spoke against the violence. But Gigi received backlash and was accused of anti-Semitism for her social media posts in support of Palestine after Israel killed more than a hundred civilians including children.
What started it all was Gigi reposting a quote this week that said, “One cannot advocate for racial equality, LGBT and women’s rights, condemn corrupt and abusive regimes, and other injustices yet choose to ignore the Palestinian oppression. It does not add up. You cannot pick and choose whose human rights matter more.”
But after that, the 26-year-old model shared a screenshot with some of the comments she received.
Gigi addressed the anti-Semitic backlash, and said: “I condemn anti-semitism. I am not trying to kill you, nor would I ever want that. I do not wish any more deaths upon Israelis, just as I feel about Palestinians. There are also Jewish Palestinians and Christian Palestinians, as there was, coexisting, with may father’s Muslim Palestinian family when he was born in Palestine in 1948. I wish you peace.”
