Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has just made an announcement that he separated from his wife, Sophie Grégoire.
Being in the public eye is never easy, especially when it’s in the middle of a deeply personal problem. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has just hopped on social media to announce his separation from his wife, Sophie Grégoire. They were together for 18 years.
Trudeau revealed the news on Wednesday, Aug. 2, in a post published in both English and French
The Prime Minister wrote, “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversation, we have made the decision to separate.”
The message continued: “As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.“
The Canadian Prime Minister’s office confirmed the news to PEOPLE. In a statement, the couple have reportedly “signed a legal separation agreement.“
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” the statement said.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire go way back. They met when they were both children growing up in Montreal, Canada. She was a classmate and childhood friend of the Prime Minister’s youngest brother, Michel.
The two reconnected as adults in 2003 when Grégoire was assigned to co-host a charity ball with Trudeau. They started dating several months later. The former couple got engaged in October 2004 and married on May 28, 2005.
The couple share three children: Xavier, born in 2007, Ella-Grace, born in 2009, and Hadrian, born in 2014.
