Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John officially started the holiday season with their first collaboration song, “Merry Christmas.” Which also includes a themed music video.
It’s no surprise to anyone by now that Ed Sheeran and Sir Elton John are friends. So, a collaboration between the two isn’t at all surprising, but for sure everyone thought it would be a ballad. A heartbreaking ballad.
But they surprised everyone when they announced their holiday song, simply themed “Merry Christmas.”
The song and the music video debuted today, December 3, and the holiday spirit guides the two to give all the proceedings from the track to charity.
Prior to the release of the music video, the two promoted the song with a Love Actually card-inspired video.
The two met at a Rocket Christmas Party, because Ed Sheeran was signed to Rocket Music, and have been friends for over a decade.
During an Instagram Live session, Ed Sheeran revealed his favorite Christmas movie is Love Actually, obviously, while Sir Elton John’s is Bad Santa.
Written by both Sheeran and John and produced by Steve Mac, it’s their first official song together, although they appeared on a video singing alongside Courteney Cox, to wish Lisa Kudrow a happy birthday.
Jason Koenig directed the music video, and it features Mr Blobby, Jonathan Ross, Big Narstie, Michael McIntyre, and The Darkness. They also recreate scenes from classic Christmas videos including Wham’s “Last Christmas,” Shakin’ Stevens, “Merry Christmas,” The Snowman’s “Walking in the Air,” East 17’s “Stay Another Day.”
