The first look at Margot Robbie as Barbie proves she was just the perfect choice for the role. The upcoming movie also got a summer 2023 release date.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will be joining forces as Barbie and Ken in the upcoming adaptation based on the famous Mattel doll.
The movie will be under Greta Gerwig‘s direction, who co-wrote the script with her partner Noah Baumbach. Mattel Films will produce the film in collaboration with Warnes Bros.
Now we also get a first look at Margot Robbie as Barbie, and she looks absolutely perfect. In the still revealed on Warner Bros’ official Twitter account, we see the multi-hyphenate fashionista smiling behind the wheel of her hot pink convertible.
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery,” Robbie, who also serves as a producer of the movie, said in a 2019 press release. “Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
Initially, Ryan Gosling had passed on playing the part, as it did not fit with his busy schedule. Given that pre-production took longer than initially planned, the studio insisted, and he found an opening in his calendar.
Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Hari Nef, and Will Ferrell will also star in the reimagining of Barbie’s world. So far, there’s no information on the plot, but with a cast like this, it has a lot of potential.
“Barbie” is parking her pink convertible in U.S. theaters on July 21, 2023.
