In a new interview, Hilary Duff opens up about Lizzie McGuire’s reboot demise. The sequel series was planned for Disney+, but they cancelled it late last year.

Recently, a lot of old TV series are getting reboots. Showtime‘s Dexter is coming back with a new season this fall. HBO‘s True Blood also has a series in the making.

In 2019, they announced the Lizzie McGuire reboot. Hilary was more than excited to reprise her role, and they got right back to work. The sequel will also have the original creator, Terri Minsky, at the helm. The idea was for Hilary to star as Lizzie in her 30s. But less than a year after the announcement, Terri left the project. She claimed they had different visions.

A Disney spokesperson said in a statement about the exit, “Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.”

But what lead to Lizzie McGuire’s reboot demise?

In a new interview with The Jess Cagle Show, Hilary says that she had too much respect for the character. The original idea was for Lizzie to act like Lizzie in a modern world, but Disney had a different direction.

“That’s kind of been the battle. Like I don’t want to call it a battle cause everyone’s on very like loving terms between, you know, me and Disney, but that that’s been the thing. I think they’re really trying to figure out what kind of content they want living on Disney+, and that doesn’t totally align with, like, where I see Lizzie right now, you know, and I’m like very protective of her and they’re very protective of her.”

“It only makes sense to me to shoot a show where she’s acting like a 30-year-old in a modern world.
