James Gunn is bringing the big guns against Martin Scorsese in a new interview. The director claimed Scorsese is “cynical” to call Marvel movies “not cinema.”
Martin Scorsese shared with The Guardian in an interview in October 2019 that he “tried” to watch a superhero movie. He added: “But that’s not cinema.”
The well-known and Academy Award winning director came under fire with the Marvel fans and filmmakers.
Now, almost two years later, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn fired back at Martin Scorsese, calling him “cynical.”
James Gunn said on Wednesday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that “it just seems awful cynical that [Scorsese] would keep coming out against Marvel and then that’s the only thing that would get him press for his movie.”
In 2019, Martin Scorsese had 10 nominations at the Oscars, including a Best Director and Best Picture. The movie didn’t won any of those.
Gunn continued, “So then he just kept coming out against Marvel. So that he could get press for his movie. He’s creating his movie in the shadow of the Marvel films. And so he uses that to get attention for something he wasn’t getting as much attention as he wanted for it.”
“And he’s one of the greatest filmmakers who’s ever existed. I love his movies. I can watch his movies with no problem. And he said a lot of things I agree with. There are a lot of things that are true about what he said.”
He added, “There are a lot of heartless, soulless, spectacle films out there that don’t reflect what should be happening. I mean, I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve talked to film directors before they went and made a big movie, and said, ‘Hey, we’re in this together, let’s do something different with these big movies. Let’s make them something different than everything that has come before them.’ And then see them cater to every single studio whim and be grossed out, frankly.”
In the episode, Gunn also shared that he’s getting ready to film the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. And that everybody read it. Except for Dave Bautista, who also shared he hasn’t read the script yet, and wants to wait until they start filming.
