Jay-Z‘s mom Gloria Carter has just married her longtime partner, Roxanne Wilshire, and the newlyweds had an A-list studded wedding.
On Sunday, July 2, Jay-Z’s mom Gloria Carter married Roxanne Wilshire, her partner of over a decade. When Jay-Z’s mom came out to him, he revealed he actually cried. He shared that during his interview with David Letterman on the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction that he did shed tears of joy upon discovering his mother fell in love. “Imagine having to live your life as someone else and you think you’re protecting your kids,” he explained. “For her to sit in front of me and tell me ‘I think I love someone,’ I really cried…I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.”
Her story also inspired one of his songs on his 2017 album, 4:44. The track in question, “Smile” has the music mogul rapping, “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian/Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take.” Other lyrics include, “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love/Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”
Happy Ending
Now, his mom got to marry the person she loves, and did so surrounded by family and A-listers. Obviously, Beyonce took a break from her Renaissance Tour to be front and center for Gloria, as well as her children, Blue Ivy, Sir, and Rumi. Her mom, Tina Knowles-Lawson, also attended the event.
Besides them, the wedding included actor and director Tyler Perry, Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland, Robin Roberts, Corey Gamble, and more.
