Jensen and his wife Danneel Ackles have just announced they are developing a Supernatural prequel. The show will focus on Sam and Dean’s parents, Mary and John.
Supernatural ended its run last year, after 15 seasons. The show, which premiered in 2005, has gathered a safe and loyal fanbase who followed the Winchester’s adventure through thick and tin.
During its 15-seasons run, the two brothers, played by Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, fought monsters, their feelings, and created bonds stronger than blood.
In fact, by the end, Supernatural had become “the family business.” Jared met his wife, Genevieve Cortese (now Padalecki) during the show. Jensen and Danneel ended up starring together in the show’s last seasons. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played John Winchester, met his wife Hilarie Burton through a blind date Jensen and Danneel organized (Danneel and Hilarie starred together in One Tree Hill).
So ending the show has been just as heartbreaking for the cast, as it was for the fans.
But that’s no longer the case, because we’ll get more from the Supernatural universe.
Jensen and Danneel are developing a Supernatural prequel called The Winchesters that would focus on Mary and John Winchester. In the original show, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith did a great job with the characters, and so did their younger versions, Matt Cohen and Amy Gumenick.
Jensen told Deadline: “After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it? When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”
Former co-executive producer Robbie Thompson will write and executive produce The Winchesters, alongside Jensen and Danneel through their company, Chaos Machine Productions that launched last fall. Jensen will reprise his role as Dean Winchester as the narrator.
Later, Jensen wrote on Instagram: Been sitting on this for a while…
Can’t wait to share…It’s the story I always wanted to know. We will hit the waypoints that have been set and fill in the rest in a way you never expected. “We got work to do”. #spnfamily #TheWinchesters
Danneel also shared: “We look forward to beginning the journey with these beloved characters, given to us by the one and only Mr. Kripke. We are going back to 1972… cars, music, peace, love and monsters.
The Winchester’s is in the capable hands of Robbie Thompson @rthompson1138 and we couldn’t be happier about that. It’s been a tough secret to keep, so we’re excited to finally be able to share the news. Can’t wait to tell this story🖤✌️🖤”
Jensen will currently star as Soldier Boy in the upcoming season of Prime Video‘s The Boys.
