NBC Cancels Golden Globes 2022

NBC cancels Golden Globes 2022 as the organization is currently under fire for their lack of diversity. So far, several networks have boycotted the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

This year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) came under fire before the Golden Globes. The word got out that none of the 87 members of the organization were Black. Following the backlash, they promised things would change.

But there was little to no change. The Golden Globes 2022 were to continue as usual, with the same white members.

But if #TimesUp taught us anything, is that standing together and speaking up does change things.

Recently, Scarlett Johansson spoke against the HFPA.

Scarlett told Variety: “The HFPA is an organization that was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole.”

There seems to have been enough noise as NBC cancels Golden Globes 2022 from airing on their network.

While waiting for a reform from the organization, several organizations have distanced themselves from HFPA. NBC is the latest one to take a stand, and it’s a big, powerful move.

In a statement, the network said: “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Netflix, Warner Bros and Amazon Studios have all released statements against HPFA. The networks are currently waiting for the reform.

This is a dramatic turn of events. But a needed one. Change can only happen if we commit to it, and this has gone for too long. Big associations should offer everyone the same rights, and minorities needs to be present in the arts just as they are all around us in real life.
