Prince Harry compared his childhood to a zoo in a new interview with actor Dax Shepard on Armchair Expert podcast. The Royal has also seemed pretty critical about Prince Charles and the way he raised him.

Prince Harry has been very controversial for almost all his life. Harry was never in direct line the throne, because he was the second child. While most of the responsibility fell onto Prince William’s shoulders, Prince Harry had quite a lot of fun.

And we all remember it.

But it wasn’t all fun, according to the Duke of Sussex. In a new interview with Dax Shephard, Prince Harry compared his childhood to a zoo. He wants to “break the cycle” moving forward when it comes to his children. Prince Harry shares Archie, 2, with Meghan Markle, and they’re also expecting a baby girl this summer.

Prince Harry said about his upbringing: “When it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on.”

“It’s a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed on anyway so we as parents should be doing the most we can to try and say ‘you know what, that happened to me, I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen to you’.”

But Prince Harry admitted that Prince Charles raised him the same way he was raised, too.

“I never saw it, I never knew about it, and then suddenly I started to piece it together and go ‘OK, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this about his life, I also know that is connected to his parents so that means he’s treated me the way he was treated, so how can I change that for my own kids?”

He also talked about his “wild” period. Prince Harry shared that he didn’t want the Royal life.

“I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be doing this, look what it did to my mum. It’s a mix between The Truman Show and being in a zoo.”

So leaving the Royal Family was the best thing he did. Now that they moved to the US, Prince Harry feels lighter.

“Living here now I can actually lift my head and actually I feel different… you can walk around feeling a little bit more free. I get to take Archie on the back of my bicycle… I would never have had the chance to do that.”
