Ryan Reynolds‘ latest flick, Free Guy, has had such a great debut that Disney had already order a sequel. In its first weekend, the movie opened up with $28M+.

Ryan Reynolds’ movie Free Guy has been long in the works. Ryan stars as a bank teller who discovers he’s actually a character in a video game.

The movie’s original premiere was on July 3, 2020. However, due to the pandemic, it was pushed back several times to December 11, 2020, then to May 21, 2021, ending up with an August premiere.

“This is the first non-IP, non-sequel that Disney has released in literally years. And not just because of the pandemic, but because of the culture of our industry, which more and more rarely bets, and bets big –they’ll bet small—but bets big on a new, original movie. That was the bet that (former 20th Century Studios Boss, now at Paramount) Emma Watts placed and that Disney doubled down on,” director Shawn Levy told Deadline.

Ryan also celebrated the success of the movie, saying: “Our company @MaximumEffort has a simple mission: “Let’s bring people together in fun, smart and unexpected ways.” Togetherness is the ultimate scarcity good these days so thank you to all the artists and audiences who came TOGETHER to make #FreeGuy such a surprise hit.”

He also confirmed that Free Guy will be getting a sequel with a typically snarky tweet: “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony”
