Scarlett Johansson spoke against Hollywood Foreign Press Association after the events prior to the Golden Globes this year. She also urged the industry “step back” from the organization and condemned their “sexist questions and remarks.”

The majority of the awards have received a lot of backlash in the recent years. You must remember the year with #OscarsSoWhite. And all the years when no female directors received a nomination. Or other minorities.

This year, The HFPA came under fire before the Golden Globes. It looks like none of the 87 members of the organization were Black. Following the backlash, they promised things would change.

In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members

Companies like Netflix and Amazon Studios, have shared they will withhold talent from participating in HFPA events until change is made. The measures they expect are an increase in the number of people of color in its membership and restrictions on gifts and payment for members’ work on committees.

In a new statement, Marvel actress Scarlett Johansson spoke against Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the Golden Globes.

Scarlett told Variety: “As an actor promoting a film, one is expected to participate in awards season by attending press conferences as well as awards shows. In the past, this has often meant facing sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment. It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences.”

“The HFPA is an organization that was legitimized by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit. Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole.”
