In a new interview with Elle magazine, Shakira opened up about her split from Pique. The two met in 2010 while filming for her “Waka Waka” music video for the 2010 World Championship. And their relationship got serious very fast. The two share two sons, Milan, born in 2013, and Sasha, born in 2015 and lived together in Spain.

Shakira admitted that it’s “really hard to talk about,” and that she’s “remained quiet and just tried to process it all” and that she’s “still going through it.”

But it hasn’t been difficult just for her but, “but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult. I have paparazzi camping outside, in front of my house, 24/7. And there’s not a place where I can hide from them with my kids, except for my own house. You know, we can’t take a walk in the park like a regular family or go have an ice cream or do any activity without paparazzi following us.

She did say she tried to “protect them,” but “then they hear things in school from their friends or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them.”

Shakira continued, “sometimes I just feel like this is all a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up at some point. But no, it’s real.

She added, “what’s also real is the disappointment to see something as sacred and as special as I thought was the relationship I had with my kids’ father and see that turned into something vulgarized and cheapened by the media. And all of this while my dad has been in the ICU and I’ve been fighting on different fronts. Like I said, this is probably the darkest hour of my life.”

And what keeps her going is that she wants to be an example for her kids. “For those women like me who believe in values like family who had the dream, the big dream of having a family forever, to see that dream broken or shredded into pieces is probably one of the most painful things that you can ever go through. But I think that women, we are resilient. You know, we have this resiliency that is just innate in all of us. And we are meant to nurture and to take care of those who depend on us. So you ask me how I manage this. And I just manage, I guess, reminding myself that I need to become an example for my kids, that I need to be what they want, what I want them to become. And I want to be there, also, for all the people who have shown me their love and support. That is my biggest strength. That’s my most powerful engine right now.
