Sorry, Joe Jonas, you looking after your kids while Sophie Turner is away filming doesn’t mean anything — it’s simple parenting.
September came with equally hot weather but also with the news that one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples, Joe Jonas, 34, and Sophie Turner, 27, are divorcing. But the poor PR around the breakup unveils something about us all — that women are still judged whenever their life doesn’t revolve around their children.
Instead of making a huge deal out of a woman out there working (or, you know, simply enjoying her life), we should stop praising men for doing the bare minimum. Because Joe Jonas looking after his kids is just parenting, not babysitting.
Joe and Sophie’s Divorce
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner met online in 2016 and their relationship moved pretty fast. The next year, the two were already engaged. After Joe popped the question, the happy couple shared a picture of Turner’s hand showing off her engagement ring. Jonas captioned the image, “She said yes,” while Turner also wrote, “I said yes.“
The two quickly became a Hollywood fan-favorite couple, given their general easygoingness and how much fun they seemed to be having.
Joe and Sophie tied the knot in 2019 with a surprise wedding in Las Vegas, given away by DJ Diplo. Later, they had a more extravagant one in the French countryside with A-list guests.
The next year, in 2020, Joe and Sophie welcomed their first child, daughter Willa, in 2020. In July 2022, they welcomed a second daughter, whose name they haven’t publicly released at the time of press. Following the filing for divorce, the second baby is identified as D., 14 months.
But everyone was to shocked when rumors of a possible divorce between them came out in early September. Eventually, Joe officially filed for divorce and the two released a joint statement indicating that they “have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage.“
Sophie Turner’s Smear Campaign
Despite the fact that the joint statement indicates they have “mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” there is an entire smear campaign against Sophie Turner. And the entire internet seems to believe it’s coming from Joe Jonas’ PR camp.
And that is literally insane. Not people believing that (but that’s a big part, too), but also the fact that the Jonas Brothers singer’s team would do that to the mother of his babies. The rumors around it are ghastly to anyone who read anything about Sophie Turner or listened to an interview with her. Not to mention misogynistic.
There were numerous conversations about a Ring cam that “captured Sophie saying and/or doing something that made him realize the marriage was over.” There’s no indication as to what that is.
Insiders associate the split with the couple’s “very different lifestyles,” with a “source with direct knowledge” telling TMZ: “She likes to party, he likes to stay at home.” That comes after numerous of times when Sophie identified herself as an introvert, adding that it was Jonas who was the social butterfly.
Speaking to television personality Conan O’Brien in 2020 for his lockdown project, “Conan at Home,” Turner spoke about how she and Jonas had very different attitudes towards their imposed isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m an introvert, I’m a homebody,” she said at the time. “If I could stay at home all day I would, so this is great for me. I leave my house like once a day anyway to walk my dogs and then that’s it.“
When it comes to her husband, the case was different. “Joe and I, everything seems to be working out in my favor here because Joe is a real social butterfly and I struggle to lock him down and just spend time with me. It’s like a prison for him, but it’s great for me.”
Joe Jonas Is Just Parenting, Not a Hero
Since the split, his camp has been going on and on about how Joe Jonas, a father of two, is taking care of his own offspring. Unheard of, right?
Needless to say, Sophie is not necessarily out there partying, but away filming in her home country, the UK. It wouldn’t be an issue if she were partying as long as her children are safe and taken care of, anyway. Meanwhile, he’s on a tour with the Jonas Brothers. His sisters-in-law (plus a fair number of nannies, one might assume), are with them on the tour. It makes sense for the two girls to stay with their dad while the mom is away working. If Sophie was staying with the girls, this wouldn’t even be a conversation.
Another story from the same outlet was describing Jonas as being in “dad mode.” He took his two young daughters out to breakfast in L.A. with a woman in a ponytail, described as a “friend helping to take care of the girls.”
It looks like the devil works hard, but Joe Jonas’ camp works harder and they’re outlet of choice is TMZ. There is no indication Sophie Turner is a bad mother. In fact, she constantly gushed about loving motherhood.
So, Joe Jonas looking after his children isn’t headline worthy, it’s just parenting. The turn on it and the smear campaign against Turner is, because life is more than just having a child if you’re a woman.
Despite the whole PR nightmare, Sophie’s camp has been radio silence. Pure class.
