Beloved reggaetón singer Daddy Yankee has just announced he’s retiring from music. He is one of the biggest names in the industry, and has been active for 32 years.
When you hear “Daddy Yankee,” it’s very likely that you’ll be able to come up with at least one song he’s sung. Even if it’s just “Gasolina” o “Despacito.”
A pioneer in the Latin music industry, the singer has been active for 32 years. Which is part of why his legacy will remain for decades to come.
But on Sunday, Daddy Yankee, on his real name Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, announced he’s retiring from music.
“This career, which has been a marathon, finally sees the finish line. Now, I am going to enjoy what all of you have given me,” the singer said in a video statement shared on his social media. “People say that I took this genre internationally, but it was you who gave me the key to open the doors to make it the biggest in the world. So I could inspire all the youngsters to be leaders.”
He explained that, while growing up, people in the “barrio” wanted to be drug dealers. Now, when he goes there, everyone wants to be a singer.
Daddy Yankee added that he will bid farewell with one last tour and album, “Legendaddy,” out on March 24.
“Formally, I’m announcing my retirement from music, giving you my best work, and my best tour. I’ll give you all the styles that have defined me on one album. ‘Legendaddy’ — it’s fight, it’s party, it’s war, it’s romance,” the singer explained.
In his career, that spanned over three decades, Daddy Yankee sold more than 30 million records.
His La Última Vuelta World Tour will kick off on Aug. 10 in Portland, Oregon until December, finishing with a date in Mexico City.
