In April 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery officially confirmed that a Harry Potter TV series is in the works. The streaming service has been working on finding a showrunner for the last couple of months, and now it has an exciting update.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav addressed the new reboot at the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, per THR. According to Zaslav, the Max Harry Potter reboot series is planned for a release on Max in 2026.

We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter. The last film was made more than a dozen years ago,” Zaslav said. “I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys] and Channing [WBD TV chief Channing Dungey] and we spent some real time with J. K. [Rowling] and her team. Both sides are thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max.”

The Harry Potter Reboot Has Been Long In The Works

The last film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, premiered in 2011. Since then, there have been multiple conversations about continuing the franchise. With seven novels, a spin-off franchise, multiple video games, theme parks, and a play, the Wizarding World is still thriving.

There have been conversations about a Harry Potter series since 2021. However, it wasn’t until 2023 that Max confirmed a Harry Potter TV series. Warner Bros. Discovery detailed the upcoming plans for the new reboot.

The upcoming Max series is supposed to be a more faithful adaptation than the films were. It also has a ten-year plan for the show, with one book per season. The book series includes seven books, which were adapted into eight films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

There is no official cast attached to the project, nor a showrunner at the time of writing.
