The famous The Hunger Games franchise is getting a sequel, and the release date it’s not very far away. Based on the novel Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes, written by THG author Suzanne Collins, Lionsgate just announced the upcoming prequel. The novel was published after the trilogy, in 2020.

Francis Lawrence, who previously helmed the franchise’s Catching FireMockingjay — Part 1 and Mockingjay — Part 2, will direct the new prequel, too.

The new movie will be set years before the moment when Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) stepped in the arena. As we know, The Hunger Games had reached their 74th edition when Katniss and Peeta won.

And the prequel will set in the same universe, and follow young Coriolanus Snow (originally portrayed by Donald Sutherland). He will be a mentor in the 10th edition of The Hunger Games. His assigned tribute will be District 12’s Lucy Gray Baird, who attracts the Capitol’s attention after singing during the reaping.

Lionsgate announced the release date, along with a small teaser during its presentation at CinemaCon. “You’re invited to return to the Games,” reads the screen with a winter scene behind it, revealing a bird and a snake. “In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird, and who is a snake.”

The Lionsgate synopsis for the film reads, “Years before he would become the tyrannical president of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.

Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes will be out in theaters November 17, 2023. May the odds be ever in your favor.
