Sophie Turner is suing her soon-to-be ex-husband Joe Jonas for “wrongful retention” of their two children. His team, however, calls the lawsuit “misleading.”
The divorce between the Game of Thrones actress and the Jonas Brothers musician is turning messier by the day.
It all started early this month, when reports claimed the beloved Hollywood couple is heading for divorce. A couple of days later, the confirmation arrived as Jonas filed for divorce and the two released a joint statement.
“After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” the statement read.
Since then, it has really been a very messy situation for both of them.
First, there was an entire smear campaign against Sophie Turner, as Joe Jonas claimed he was taking care of their daughters while she was away. Although there were many mentions of her alleged “partying,” Sophie is currently away in the UK filming for a new movie.
Sophie Turner’s Lawsuit
So, now Sophie Turner is suing Joe Jonas for “wrongful retention” of their two daughters, Willa, born in 2020, and D., born in 2022. The lawsuit claims the 34-year-old singer is withholding their daughters’ passports in order to prevent them from returning to “their habitual residence in England.”
But Jonas disagrees with the lawsuit. “Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting this past Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the kids,” Jonas’s representatives wrote in a statement obtained by People. “They have been with her since that meeting. Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together toward an amicable coparenting setup.”
According to the statement, Turner requested the passports “less than 24 hours” after their meeting on September 17. “Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK,” the statement continued. “Thereafter she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could take them out of the country immediately. If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida court order.”
“After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case,” the statement from Jonas’s camp claims. “Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce. The Florida court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children.”
The statement further asserts that Jonas is “okay with the kids being raised both in the US and the UK,” but emphasizes that their daughters “have spent the vast majority of their lives in the US.”
“This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending,” the statement continued. “When language like ‘abduction’ is used, it is misleading at best and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted.”
Sophie Turner Found Out About the Divorce in the Media
Sophie’s lawsuit dropped many bombshells. Including that she found out about the divorce from the media.
“The breakdown of the parties’ marriage happened very suddenly,” the documents state, according to Entertainment Tonight. “The parties had an argument on Aug. 15, 2023. On or about Sept. 1, 2023, [Jonas] filed a divorce case against [Turner] in Florida. On or about Sept. 5, 2023, [Turner] found out through the media that [Jonas] had filed for divorce.”
Somehow, we’re all reminded of how Joe Jonas broke up with Taylor Swift via a 25-second phone call.
